Matthew C. Perry was a commodore
of the American navy who was commanded by President Millard Fillmore to lead a
naval exposition to Japan to force them to sign a trade treaty with American
because many American business that that it would be good for them to trade
with Japan. So on July 8, 1853 Matthew C.
Perry took four American steam powered war ships in to Tokyo bay. Since the
Japanese have never saw steam powered war ships and America had very high tech
guns on their ships the Japanese could not resist trading with America. After
this display Japan and America signed the treaty of kanagawa. This allowed
Americans to trade at two ports in Japan. The treaty also promised help for any
American warships and sailors that were shipwrecked off the coast of Japan. The
treaty gave allowed American ships to buy a number of various things from
Japan’s ports.
