Eddie Rickenbacker was born in
Columbus, Ohio and was a race car driver. When he entered the war his driving
skills served him well as a fighter pilot. He was appointed the commander of
the 94th Aero Squadron
which was the first all American squadron to enter the combat zone. Throughout
the war Rickenbacker fought in 134 air battles and shot down 26 aircraft making
him the top American combat pilot.
In one battle Rickenbacker single
handily fought seven German aircraft. This act got him awarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor.
