Alvin York was born in Tennessee
in 1887. At first Alvin completely opposed the war and initially tried to avoid
the draft. He thought that his religion banned him from killing another person
but then he found that he could fight if the cause was just.
During
the Battle of the Argonne Forest some German machine guns on a hill opened fire
on York’s platoon and killed nine men, York then took charge of his men and
charged the machine guns. For that Battle York killed about 12 Germans, took
control of the machine guns, and took 132 prisoners. For his actions York was
awarded the Medal of Honor and the French Croix de Guerre.
